Just a note – “on holiday” is a British English phrase, in American English we say: “On vacation” is always singular. It refers to the entire period of the vacation, no matter the length. (Correction: it’s always singular when speaking about a particular vacation. You could say, “He took three vacations this year”. I can’t think of a way “on vacations” would be used, though.
